Time Zones between Melbourne and Perth

There is one thing that confuses a lot of travellers. Even with the Internet and the latest model Smartphones, people have no clue what is going on. That is time zones.

Yes. There are some confusing and peculiar time zones between Melbourne and Perth.

The purpose of this post is to provide details about the time zones and to make you understand what is going to come ahead as you drive.

Why should you know about time zones?

There are a lot of benefits to knowing your time zones and the places where they change.

If you know the time zones and the time in each of the time zone, then

• you can plan well

• you can avoid confusions

• you can avoid going to bed at 6 PM thinking it is 8 PM

• you can avoid rushing and arriving at a destination only to realise that you are already ahead of time by 2 hours

• it'll help you to visit a place well before it's closing time

Time Zones between Melbourne and Perth

I would like to split the time zones between Melbourne and Perth into two parts.

1. Time zones between Melbourne and Adelaide
2. Time zones between Adelaide and Perth

The reasons for splitting these are

• it is easy to understand the time zones between Melbourne and Adelaide. Moreover, your smartphone will automatically detect the time zone change as soon as you cross the State border

• it is a bit difficult to understand the time zones between Adelaide and Perth because of the Border time zone. Unfortunately, your smartphone won't detect the Border time zone when you cross the State border

Let us see the details.

Time Zones between Melbourne (VIC) and Adelaide (SA)

As shown in the above photo and table, there are two time zones between Melbourne and Adelaide.

1. Victoria time zone
2. South Australia time zone

The time zone changes when you cross the border of Victoria and South Australia. Hence, you'll need to adjust your clock as soon as you cross the border. Your smartphone will detect the time zone change and update the time automatically. You need not do anything.

Victoria time zone is always ahead of South Australia time zone by 30 minutes.

For example: If Adelaide time is 8 AM, then Melbourne time is 8:30 AM.

Both Victoria and South Australia observe Day Light Savings (DST). Hence, the time difference is 30 minutes throughout the year.

If you are driving from Melbourne to Adelaide, then you gain time. Hence, backward your clock by 30 minutes.

If you are driving from Adelaide to Melbourne, then you lose time. Hence, forward your clock by 30 minutes.

Time Zones between Adelaide (SA) and Perth (WA)

You'll experience the time zone change between Adelaide and Perth when you drive across the Nullarbor Plain. Hence, I have created a separate post and added it under the Nullarbor section.

The reason for adding it under the Nullarbor section is mainly due to logical grouping so that you can understand all the Nullarbor related things.
